Kitchen Materials

Kitchen Materials is a project I worked on in my Materials and Real-Time Shaders class at SCAD. The goal for the three projects was to create seamless, manufactured, and organic materials, respectively, in two different states. I planned to create different materials that would be found around a kitchen, to make a cohesive and visually engaging piece.

Softwares:

Adobe Substance Designer, Adobe Substance Painter, Maya, Unreal Engine

Project 1

For project 1, we were tasked with creating seamless materials. I thought about some of them main components that would make up a kitchen, referencing images and picking materials that I thought would go together best. I decided on making materials that could be used for the floor, walls, and for some miscellaneous objects in the kitchen.

During this project, I learned how to use Adobe Substance Designer, as well as how to create more realistic textures through displacement.  I also learned how to apply the textures in Unreal to also make the displacement maps look realistic.

Project 2

Project 2 involved creating materials for manufactured objects. I thought about what objects might be found around the kitchen, and decided on making a cutting board, citrus juicer, bowl, and a rat trap. I then proceeded to find references for both the new product and what it would look like used/worn.

I then began creating the materials in Substance Designer, using what I learned from the previous project to make realistic materials. During this project, I also refreshed my skills in Substance Painter, where I learned how to properly apply different masks and methods to achieve worn/used looking assets.

Project 3

Project 3 was about creating organic materials. With the previous objects I had already created, I thought about what would go well them and make the most sense in the scene. I decided on adding lemons, bread, and a rat to incorporate into the environment.

Creating these materials introduced me to a lot more tools and methods to making realistic materials. I learned how and why to add subsurfacing to objects, as well as what certain details to pay attention to when finalizing materials. This project really helped me progress my material skills to make more realistic assets, both organic and manufactured.
